Someone Told Me
I began with this composition on the 30th of April 2023, and creating this kind of music even came as a surprise to me.
This is how it started.
I'm a hummer, often humming when I walk, work, go shopping etc. People I meet, who are more or less attentive, tend to give me a smile, when they hear that. Just two or three days ago I thought it would be great to hum something which musically makes sense, like a theme, a longer phrase, or song, instead of small, incoherent meanderings.
Yesterday was different. First, I woke up this morning – no, this is not going to be a blues song ;-) – and I had some longer phrases going on in my mind, which I tried out on the guitar, and played them until they stuck with me.
Later that day, I went for a walk, and like usual I was humming while I walked, but this time longer phrases were pouring out of me.
Then, out of the blue, this inner voice said: I have tried to make you listen all life long
! Of course, I argued a bit with myself about that voice, but if that was myself, another part of myself, a guide or helper, or some composer who wants to channel music to make me materialise it – it doesn't really matter.
That evening, I started to compose a piece which goes by the working title Someone Told Me
. This piece is not yet finished, it is a work in progress, and I do not know how long it will be or which direction it will take, but I'm happy to share what I did so far.
Here is the latest mix of "Someone Told Me".
– Enjoy!
Wistful
- On 2022-11-13 I finished a new version of a piano piece with the working title
Wistful
, which I almost manage to play completely on our acoustic upright piano, but everytime I press record, I get the red-light-fever – meaning my nerves are acting up. So, I had to play this on the MIDI-keyboard, winding down the tempo, and do some editing.
The process on the upright piano was a mixture of composing, practicing piano technically, and trying to get the expression and phrasing right.
Having Fun Yet?
Written on the 11th and 12th of August 2021, the time signature changes between 6/8 and 7/8, with some 4/4 and 5/8.
These are incomplete teaser drafts, very rough mixes, which I nevertheless hope you will enjoy. Let me know what you think.
- Having Fun Yet version 1 with piano only
This version could go in a totally different direction than version 2. I hear a solo violin playing to the piano, and who knows what the muses else have planned and in store for this piece. Maybe they'll even have a word with Chick? ;-) - Having Fun Yet version 2 with bass and synthesizers
